          BIOGRAPHY

Marie Alexandra Báez Vilá (native of Utuado, Puerto Rico, b. 1982- ) is known for her bold, striking, multicoloured palettes used in her compositions. She is an artist who dynamically manipulates acrylic paint to create original and unique depictions, mostly inspired by her dreams, Caribbean roots, Latin American folklore, multiculturalism, biodiversity, and her Catholic faith. Through her spontaneous and expressive work, Marie shares with viewers the rich inner world she carries within, one filled with genuineness, love, whimsical dreams, and a deep passion for literature. Her artistic language unfolds across a variety of styles, including cubism, expressionism, modernism, and abstract art.

Marie states: “I love it when the inner child in me takes control when I create art, because I am able to see the world through her eyes. The world suddenly transforms from ordinary into a magnificently beautiful and special place where imagination becomes reality through artistic expression.” As a child, Marie A. Báez Vilá received recognition for her innate talent, which was influenced and nurtured by her mother, María H. Vilá, an educator and artist herself. Alongside the cheerful support of her father, Luis E. Báez, who would often say, “You weren’t born to have your feet on the ground. You were born to fly,” Marie found the encouragement she needed to move beyond her introverted nature and begin sharing herself with others through her creations.

Following her mother’s footsteps, Marie Alexandra Báez Vilá became a dedicated and successful primary school teacher. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Utuado, Puerto Rico, previously known as “La Montaña” (“The Mountain”). With a genuine love for children and a deep passion for art, she naturally integrated creative expression into her teaching practice. As she encountered the challenges faced by pupils from difficult backgrounds, Marie pursued further studies in Art Therapy through online courses from Oxford University and other institutions, believing that artistic expression could become a powerful tool for healing and understanding.

Marie A. Báez Vilá has earned numerous certifications in Art Therapy-related fields, including Art Therapy, Trauma and PTSD, Therapeutic Art Life Coach, Art Therapy for a greater understanding of the self, Art Therapy for personal development and self-healing, Therapeutic Art for healing, happiness and stress reduction, and Positive Psychology Art Coach. This expanding body of knowledge has already begun to shape and deepen her artistic journey, and continues to influence the intention and emotional resonance behind her work.

In addition to her visual art, Marie Alexandra Báez Vilá is also a published writer. Her debut book, The Window Where Lavender Grows, brings together vignettes and poems born from faith, reflection, and the quiet moments where the soul learns to hope again. The book is currently available on Amazon in both English and Spanish, extending her artistic voice beyond the canvas and into the written word.

Marie Alexandra Báez Vilá’s artwork has been exhibited in multiple exhibitions across Puerto Rico and the United States, and she continues to present her newest pieces in diverse venues throughout Glasgow, Scotland, where she currently resides.
